SERIAL killer Levi Bellfield has been attacked in jail and slashed in the face with a home-made weapon, The Sun on Sunday can reveal.
Former bouncer Bellfield, 48, fought off another con who ran and lunged at him with the shank.
Bellfield sustained a “nasty” cut over his left eye and narrowly escaped serious injury.
Police are now investigating the assault in a top security unit at Durham’s Frankland Prison housing some of the country’s most dangerous and notorious inmates.
Bellfield - serving a whole life for murdering schoolgirl Milly Dowler and two young women - has already sued the Ministry of Justice once for failing to keep him safe in jail.
That followed a previous minor assault in 2009 at Wakefield Prison, West Yorks, for which he was awarded £4,500 in compensation two years ago.
During the latest incident, another con attacked Bellfield in an education suite at the Category A prison on Thursday December 8.
An insider said : “This guy apparently ran up to him and slashed him across the face with a home-made shank.

“The blade narrowly missed his left eye and left a nasty cut which will leave some scarring. But he was lucky it wasn’t much worse.
“A struggle took place and Bellfield managed to grab hold of the weapon and then the officers broke it up.
“The police are involved but Bellfield has apparently refused to make a statement and says he will sort it out in his own way.”
The Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder (DSPD) unit where the attack happened has around 80 inmates.
Other notorious inmates held there include Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe and Soham killer Ian Huntley, who have forged a friendship together.
The source said : “The guy who slashed Bellfield is also on the unit and there has apparently been grief between them.”
Bellfield was convicted at the Old Bailey in 2011 of murdering Milly in 2002 after abducting her while she was walking home from school in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.
Three years earlier he was convicted over the South West London hammer murders of 22-year-old French student Amelie Delagrange and 19-year-old gap-year student Marsha McDonnell, as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, 18.
Earlier this year, Bellfield finally came clean about Milly’s murder and admitted raping her on his mother’s driveway in Feltham, West London, before dumping her body in a wood 30 miles away.
The ex-wheel clamper and father-of-11 was also suspected of carrying out attacks on 100 girls and women during a five-year reign of terror across the South East.
He mainly targeted slim blondes and tailed last night buses looking for potential victims.
Bellfield was said to have confessed to a series of other murders and crimes last year.
But the Met Police dropped their probe into his claims last month, saying there was no evidence he committed any crimes for which he was not convicted.
While behind bars, Bellfield has converted to Islam and now calls himself Yusuf Rahim, though the attack on him is not thought to have been religiously-motivated.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Two HMP Frankland prisoners were involved in an incident on 8 December. The police are investigating and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further.”
A Durham Police spokesperson said : “Police were called to HMP Frankland to reports of a minor assault which occurred on December, 8. Enquiries are ongoing.”
His brother Richard Turner said: “As far as I know, he was not left with any scars and was not hospitalised. It sounds like a minor fight.”
