All three psychiatric treatment centres, home to evil killers including Ian Brady, Dale Cregan and Angel of Death Beverley Allitt, have designed gourmet menus for the festive period.

Patients can choose from rump and sirloin steak, turkey Christmas roasts with pigs in blankets and all the trimmings or beef madras.

Rampton is also serving game stew using venison, pheasant and partridge.

Specially-trained chefs will serve plates for vegans, vegetarians and Halal dishes for Muslims.

Lunches and dinners come with a choice of desserts including Christmas pudding with brandy sauce, chocolate yule logs, plum and apple crumble, chocolate coated ice cream or cheesecake.

The NHS-funded hospitals will host buffet brunches of full English breakfasts in the mornings, while a selection of mini party foods and cheese and crackers will be served in the evenings.

The gluttonous menus, obtained by The Sun using the Freedom of Information Act, will be served at all three on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

While Broadmoor and Ashworth patients will also be treated on Christmas Eve.

A source said: “Knowing some of the nation’s most evil criminals will be tucking in to menus many of us could only dream of this Christmas is a slap in the face to millions of hard working Brits.

“It looks like that those in society who work hard to earn an honest living are coming in second to murderers who milk the system.

“Some patients will be in line to earn gifts and presents from quizzes – and they’ll be hoping for a bigger pair of trousers to pig out in at this rate.”

Tory MP Philip Davies criticised the fairness of the festive freebies, adding: “It’s perverse that people who have committed such horrendous crimes are going to get a slap up Christmas dinner over the festive period.

“They’re clearly getting a far better deal than many law abiding, decent British people will be able to afford for themselves.

“And that is something that can’t possibly be right or fair.”

David Davies, Tory MP for Monmouth, South Wales, added: "It's clearly not right that people who have committed such atrocities will be eating three course dinners.

"It's not fair to millions of families who try their best to earn an honest living and work hard to have a good Christmas, while criminals are getting it much better."

Harry Davis, Campaign Manager at the TaxPayers' Alliance, blasted the luxury menus for wasting taxpayers’ cash following years of tough cutbacks.

He added: "No one expects inmates to spend their Christmas eating gruel but families struggling to make ends meet will think serving steak is over the top.

“It's important that the right balance is struck and that costs are kept under control, especially as prisons need to find savings in their budgets."

In total, there are 210 patients at Broadmoor, 220 at Ashworth and 390 and Rampton.

The ultra-secure psychiatric wards are home to those detained under the Mental Health Act, including hundreds of convicted criminals.

However they have often been blasted by critics who believe many patients should be in proper prisons.

Bloodthirsty Sutcliffe ballooned to 20-stone and cost taxpayers £10million by spending over three decades in Broadmoor, while Moors Murder Brady’s bill is nearly £15million.

Ruthless Brady, 78, has played the system for his own ends since switching to Merseyside’s Ashworth Hospital in 1985.

Rampton patients include deranged children’s hospital nurse Allitt, who murdered four sick kids, attempted to murder three others and caused grievous bodily harm to a further six.

Her youngest victim Liam Taylor was just seven weeks old when he was murdered. She was caged for at least 30 years in 1993.

One-eyed monster Cregan followed in Brady’s footsteps after a psychological assessment ruled he was unfit to serve his quadruple life sentences in prison.

The former drug lord gunned down PCs Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, after luring them to an address in Manchester in 2012.

At the time he was on the run after murdering gang rivals David and Mark Short.

A psychologist ruled he was mentally ill and should move to Ashworth where he has his own cell and is allowed to roam the landscaped grounds.

But last month he caused fury after penning a letter to his pal boasting of his stress-free life inside.

The vile 33-year-old told how he spends every day in the gym toning his body, plays tennis and snooker, cooks pizza and even has access to kayaking sessions in a swimming pool.

Patients at the hospitals cost around £300,000-a-year to look after, around ten times more than Category B and C prisoners.
