When was the Zurich shooting, where is the Islamic Centre and what other gun attacks have taken place in the Swiss city?
A GUNMAN fired at three people at an Islamic prayer centre in Zurich just after a scheduled prayer service had started.
Streets surrounding the centre of the city were shut down after the unknown man opened fire at three men standing inside the mosque.
When was the shooting in Zurich?
The shooting of three men inside a prayer centre took place in the afternoon of December 19.
The mystery shooter, wearing dark clothing, opened fire on a group of worshippers at about 5.30pm.
Police have said the attack injured the men aged 30, 35 and 56, with some seriously wounded.
About a dozen people were said to have been in the prayer hall at the time.
The worshippers were mainly from North Africa, Somalia and Eritrea.
The gunman fled from the scene in the centre of the Swiss city. Police were still hunting him hours later before a body was found on the river bank nearby.
He was thought to be about 30 years old and wearing a dark wool cap.
Where is the Islamic Centre?
The mosque is in the centre of Zurich, in a neighbourhood known for cafes and the city's red-light district.
It is near to Gessner bridge over the Sihl River, where the body was found yesterday.
Police confirmed this was the body of the gunman.
After the gunman went on the run police cordoned off roads surrounding the religious centre.
Cops wearing balaclavas, anti-riot helmets and armed with assault rifles were seen patrolling the area.
Police said it was not known if the attack had anything to do with the location.
What other attacks have taken place in Switzerland?
Attacks by gunmen are rare in the largely peaceful country, but Switzerland was shaken in 2013 by at least two multiple-fatality shootings.
Earlier this year passengers on a train, including a six-year-old child, were targeted by a man with "fire and a knife".
The attack in August left at least seven people injured and suffering from burns and knife wounds.
