Theresa May pledges solidarity with Germany after Berlin market terror attack

THERESA May has said the Berlin terror attack “shocked us all” as she pledged solidarity with Germany.

The PM dubbed Christmas market carnage “appalling news”.

And she offered the UK’s help to the German authorities to track down any other members of the extremist cell that carried it out.

Mrs May told MPs yesterday: “We’ve seen very vivid images on our newspapers and television and I think they’ve shocked us all.

“I just wanted to express our condolences.

“The condolences of all of us are with those who mourn, and all those who have been affected. We hold them in our thoughts today.”

The PM also condemned the assassination of the Russian ambassador to Turkey in Ankara, which was broadcast on live TV as he delivered a speech.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also rang his opposite number Frank-Walter Steinmeier to tell him the country “stands shoulder to shoulder” with his.

After Monday’s double dose of bitter violence shocked the continent, Europe Minister Sir Alan Duncan branded Andrei Karlov’s murder in Turkey as “a “heinous attack”.

Giving evidence to MPs, Sir Alan said: “You can be assured that the Foreign Office, in a proper way, has been in contact both with our Turkish and our Russian counterparts to express our condolences”.
