Fury after ‘disgusting’ yobs vandalise bench for ‘beautiful’ crash victim, 16, killed with boy, 19, at car meet
Yobs write 'This is a bench, not a shrine' on tribute bench to crash victim
A FAMILY is heartbroken after vile yobs defaced a memorial bench for 16-year-old school girl.
Graffiti was scrawled over the tribute for Liberty Charris, who died in a horror crash at a car meet last year.
The memorial in Oldbury, West Midlands has been targeted for the second time causing outrage amongst her family and friends.
Liberty was tragically killed alongside Ben Corfield, 19, after being struck by a vehical at a street race.
But a note was left by vandals over a photo of Liberty which read “this is a bench, not a shrine.”
Gemma Perry, Liberty’s aunt has said the latest defacing has permenantly damaged the bench, which the crematorium has now offered to replace, reports.
When asked what she would say to the person who vandalised the bench, Gemma said: “I’d just question why? I can’t get my head around why someone would be so cruel to a 16-year-old girl who died in horrific circumstances.”
“They’re tampering with the only thing bringing comfort to her mom, it’s heartbreaking.
“One of Liberty’s friends, Ava, goes to the bench several times a week and does some of the decorations on there, she is really upset about it too.”
Gemma has recieved loads of support on social media since posting the damage done to Liberty’s tribute bench.
One friend posted, “Absolutely vile thing to do.” While another posted, “some people have no consideration or compassion for others. Leaving a note like that is cowardly behaviour. What a troll.”
Dudley Council who are responsiple for Chase Road crematorium have acknoledged the incidents and hope the culprit’s conscience will stop them from doing this again.
Counciller Patrick Harley, leader of the council, said: “I am appalled at this. The families have suffered enough without this type of senseless and mindless vandalism.”
“Furthermore, the family purchased this bench themselves so can do without these awful remarks and actions. The loss of a child is the worst experience a parent can endure.”
