Sporadic cracks of gunfire erupted amid the loud explosions of outgoing artillery, as the Israel Defence Forces fought running battles.

They surrounded the Al Shifa hospital amid growing international concern.

Military chiefs believe the Hamas terror command is located in a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the building and have vowed to smoke out its leaders.

Tonight, Colonel Moshe Tetro of the IDF said there were clashes between his troops and Hamas terrorist operatives around the hospital.

But he stressed the hospital remained open and denied reports it was under siege.

He said: “There is no shooting at the hospital and there is no siege

“I personally spoke with the director of the hospital.

“The east side of the hospital remains open.

“Additionally, we can coordinate with anyone who wants to leave the hospital safely."
