The Ministry of Defence also forked out £1million to someone hurt in a fall.

And £888,000 went to a serviceman exposed to the cold, figures show.

Some £6million went to a soldier thought to have suffered burns while putting out a fire while training overseas and £4.1million was paid in a chemical exposure case.

The MoD figures for 2022/23, which include legal fees, dwarf those for personnel injured in the line of duty, which is capped at £575,000.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance said the costs “outline the importance of ensuring accidents are avoided”.
