In an interview pop icon George said: “Diana was the only person that I knew who made me feel like an ordinary person. That’s what I thought was so amazing about her.”

The late singer said he “really got on well” with the Royal, reports.

He added: “But I was always reluctant to call her up. It was almost like a mate of mine who doesn’t want to call me up too much in case it looks strange – because he thinks that everybody else is calling me up.”

Following Princess Diana’s death in 1997 George admitted he ‘bawled his eyes out at the service’.

He said: “I had forgotten my hanky and I was really streaming. I was one of the few people in that part of Westminster Abbey that was really blubbering and I remember thinking: ‘God, this is going to be really embarrassing.’”

Wham! singer George was found dead in bed on Christmas Day by his boyfriend Fadi Fawaz.

Devastated Fadi took to Twitter today to pay tribute to his lover, who died on Christmas Day.

He wrote: “ITs a xmas i will never forget finding your partner dead peacefully in bed first thing in the morning.. I will never stop missing you xx (sic)”

Former partner Kenny Goss also paid tribute to the star as he talked of his “long time love”.

In an official statement, grieving Goss said: “I’m heartbroken with the news that my dear friend and long time love George Michael has passed.

“He was a major part of my life and I loved him very, very much. He was an extremely kind and generous man.

“The beautiful memories and music he brought to the world will always be an important part of my life and those who also loved and admired him.”

Thames Valley Police said an ambulance attended a property in Goring, Oxfordshire, at 1,42pm on Christmas Day, adding that his death was being treated as "unexplained but not suspicious".

In a statement, the star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.

"The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time.

"There will be no further comment at this stage."

Michael's longtime manager Michael Lippman told Billboard that the cause of death was believed to be heart failure.

Tributes have been paid to the star, whose hits included Club Tropicana, Freedom, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, and Careless Whisper - which launched his solo career.
