James Bulger’s family urge Parole Board to keep his killer Jon Venables in jail amid fears he’ll be free by Christmas

The parole hearing was heard in private to protect Jon Venables’ mental state — but he then stayed away anyway

THE family of murdered tot James Bulger wrote to parole board officers telling of their fear his killer will be released.

They made the move after being told they could not attend in person.

The parole hearing was heard in private to protect Jon Venables’ mental state — but he then stayed away anyway.

The board has delayed a decision as it weighs up the evidence.

Its ruling is expected in about two weeks.

A family source told The Sun: “The family has written to the decision makers, saying they believe Venables is a danger to the public and to children, and that he needs to be kept locked up.

"It would destroy them to see him a free man again.

“It should be a cut and dry case.

“There should be no need for debate or for taking extra time.

“He’s a monster.

"It’s not like he’s gone away and led a quiet life.

“He’s repeatedly in trouble. Over and over."

Venables, 41, and Robert Thompson were both ten when they abducted and killed James, two, in Liverpool in 1993.

They were jailed but released with new identities in 2001.

Venables was recalled in 2010 for hoarding child abuse images and again in 2017 for possessing a paedophile manual.

He was refused parole in 2020.

The Parole Board decision on Venables is expected in the week starting December 11.

Robert Thompson has not reoffended.
