Poor white kids least likely ethnic group to reach university, says report
Report blames parents lax attitude with homework and being unable to hire private tutor

POOR white kids are the least likely ethnic group in Britain to reach University – a damning report found last night.
The Social Mobility Commission said only one in ten of the poorest ever make it to higher education after lagging behind at school.
It said a far higher proportion of black – 3 in ten - Bangladeshi – 5 in ten - and Chinese children – 7 in ten – go to uni.
It blamed white British parents who too often are less involved in their kids’ education, less encouraging or less able to pay for a private tutor.
But it said young blacks and Asians were more likely than whites to end up unemployed in the UK – raising huge questions about a “level playing field” and discrimination by employers.

It said young Asian Muslim women often succeed in education but struggle to and secure jobs in managerial or professional occupations.
Alan Milburn, Social Mobility Commission chair, said: “The British social mobility promise is that hard work will be rewarded.
“This research suggests that promise is being broken for too many people in our society.”
