Gazza – who won 57 England caps – looked to have at least four cuts on his face as well as two of his fingers strapped together as he left the hospital.

The shaken former Newcastle ace, a self-confessed alcoholic, was so unsteady after the attack he had to be helped into a car by a friend before being driven away.

An onlooker said: “He looked very frail outside his house. His head was covered in blood.

“He was very shaky on his feet and had had to be helped by a friend into a car.

“He wouldn’t have been able to have got there without help, he was in such a bad way.”

He had just been discharged from an east London hospital after being set upon just after 6pm on Tuesday night.

Reports yesterday claimed he had been “very drunk” at the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch before being kicked down the stairs.

One eyewitness claimed he had been “spitting, making racist remarks and groping women” before the violence unfolded.

Alvin Carpio wrote on Twitter the striker was not in a good state as the disturbance blew up.

He tweeted: “Gazza has just been kicked down the stairs by a guy whose friend got slapped by him. He really isn't in a good place.

“It's a sad state: He's been spitting, making racist remarks & groping women, all while throwing around £ notes.

“He was racially abusing my mates, and hitting one of them on the shoulder and head before throwing a £20 note on him.

“With all that's happened, hope Gazza is okay. He was inspirational during his heyday.”

Gazza had spent Christmas in Newcastle and had been due to travel to Bournemouth on Tuesday.

It is not known how or why he ended up in London and got involved in the trouble.

Metropolitan Police officers called to the scene at 6.05pm were unable to find the culprits and were yesterday pouring over CCTV footage to try and identify them.

A police spokesman refused to identify anyone involved but said a 49-year-old man was the victim of the attack.

He told The Sun: “Officers are looking through CCTV footage and they will take it from there.

“In terms of this assault, the culprits are still being sought.”

London Ambulance Service refused to comment and directed enquiries to the police.

Gazza has battled alcohol addiction for the past two decades and at the height of his problem would drinks bottles of spirits each day.

A spokesman for Gazza declined to comment on the incident or the police hunt for the attackers last night.
