Disappointed visitors took to reviewing site TripAdvisor to slam the Scottish market.

One user blasted: "Real disappointment Edinburgh, it was a good German Christmas market.

"It's now a place where you might as well empty your wallet into a bucket at the entrance and turn round and walk back out."

Another person added: “Purely consumerist and profiteering tourist trap. Inauthentic, overcrowded and pretentious - a scam.”

Others claimed the drinks were overpriced - with a pint for a whopping £7 served in a paper cup.

A third said: “This has to be the worst market I have visited. Mainly food stands with overpriced food and drinks.

"Mulled wine/cider will set you back £7, for a small paper cup.

“It was certainly not a market to grab a bargain at, there were a handful of different stands. What a waste of time.”

Visitors warned others to check their wallet before buying a ticket on the rides - as a spinning tea cups ride can cost between £26 and £20.80.

One user also warned about scammers, adding: "Check the amounts that they charge when you are doing a card payment."

Locals also complained about the crowds and said the experience was boring.

They said: "The market was really disappointing. It was very crowded, expensive and there was nothing ‘uniquely Scottish’ about it.

"It seems like such a great opportunity to showcase local arts, crafts, food and talent but instead it was really tatty and repetitive. I wouldn’t recommend visiting."

But some customers disagreed and said the market it is worth visiting - despite the prices.

One user said: “Lovely Christmas Market with stalls full of crafts, food and drink.

"Have a go on the big wheel while enjoying mulled wine and the beauty of Edinburgh."

The visitor recommended to visit George Street to enjoy the attractions and lights at the old town.

An Edinburgh Christmas Market spokesperson said: "The price of beer at Edinburgh's Christmas bars start from £6.50 a pint. Prices at other bars or imported beers may vary.

"The teacups and saucer attraction at our Festive Family Funfair is priced at £3.50 per person.

"Edinburgh’s Christmas is proud to offer a 20 per cent discount to local visitors for all rides and attractions to keep costs as low as possible."

The market runs from November 17 to January 6.

It comes as blasted Edinburgh's Christmas market after feeling like they were "herded at a cattle market".
