He then added sarcastically: “And time is running out. I'm getting very close to getting old and dying.”

The Welshman also took aim at BBC cricket broadcaster Jonathan Agnew who is due to receive an MBE.

, who has also worked for the BBC and Channel Four, posted a now deleted tweet that read: “I'm a little drunk but I'm going to say it.

“What the f*** has Jonathan Agnew got that I haven't? Call it a Twitter meltdown, I call it truth.”

Some of his followers started messaging him back in an effort to cheer him up with one person, Michael Van Huffel, saying: “Are you familiar with the book ‘so you’ve been publicly shamed?’ (A book Ronson wrote).

“It’s about ppl who get drunk & tweet & next day are hated.” Another, called KievKirby, said: “Hush now. You know gin makes you maudlin.

“I hereby grant thee an honorary MBE for all Twitter to see! Consider yourself MBE'd.”

One follower even went to the trouble of photo-shopping Ronson’s face onto an image of someone else posing with a gong and giving a thumbs up to the camera.

Afterwards Ronson posted again, seeming much calmer, saying: “Tonight you have seen my soul at its barest and most raw.

“[During] the next New Year honours list I'm going to stay stoically silent.”

Agnew was one of several people involved in sport to receive a gong with the New Year honours list officially announced last night.

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah and tennis world number one Andy Murray have been awarded knighthood and Jessica Ennis-Hill will become a dame.

There was also a knighthood for para-equestrian Lee Pearson and a damehood for rower Katherine Grainger who, like Ennis-Hill, retired after the Rio Olympics earlier this year which saw Great Britain come second in the medal table and in front of the USA and Australia.
