ESTATE agent Suzy Lamplugh vanished after going to show a client around a flat in Fulham in 1986.

Cold case detectives named convicted rapist and murderer John Cannan as the prime suspect of her murder in 2002.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service said there was not enough evidence to prosecute him.

The killer was reported to be "on his deathbed" and is likely to die in jail.

Cannan has now claimed he has an alibi for the day Suzy went missing.

"I was not involved in the disappearance of London estate agent, Suzy Lamplugh," he told . "I have an alibi."

He continued: "On the day in question I was in central Birmingham treating my mother to a spot of lunch and following that, engaged in shopping.

"So why do the police insist upon blaming me?"

Despite numerous investigations by police, the case has remained unsolved and Suzy has never been found.

Here we look at three major clues that haunt the case.

Hairs, fibres and body tissue samples

Hairs, fibres and body tissue samples found in the estate agent's abandoned white Ford Fiesta are thought to be the focus of the new probe, .

Last year, ex-detective Jim Dickie told the newspaper mystery DNA from a smudged fingerprint found on the car's rear-view mirror could be Suzy's killer.

Lack of technology meant forensic detectives were unable to extract a profile from it in 2000 when Mr Dickie reopened the investigation.

He said: "My advice from the experts was that scientific advances may improve some time in the future and DNA science may develop to enable testing without destroying it."

A Scotland Yard spokesman refused to discuss what materials were being examined when approached by The Mirror.

They said: "The investigation is still active with the most recent forensic review being this year."

Suzy's final appointment - 'Mr Kipper'

For decades police, family and friends have been baffled by the identity of Suzy's final appointment on July 28, a 'Mr Kipper' who was viewing a property in Shorrolds Road.

No one has ever come forward claiming they were the man she was showing a house to, leading many to believe it was Cannan.

Adding fuel to the theory is that the convicted killer was nicknamed 'Kipper' by residents at the bail hostel he was living in, due to his fondness for the fish, his habit of taking regular kips and his wearing of 1960s-style kipper ties.

However, these aren't the only theories about the bizarre mystery man.

One sinister hypothesis notes that if you add DNA to the word kipper, you get kidnapper.

Some amateur sleuths reckon this demonstrates the sinister intentions of Suzy's killer all along, and that they always planned to hold her against her will.

Others have suggested kipper is rhyming slang for Jack the Ripper.

There is another theory that Mr Kipper didn't exist at all.

In 2019, former Scotland Yard investigator David Videcette claimed it was invented by Suzy to cover her tracks so she could leave the office.

Last known sighting

The last known sighting of Suzy was her getting into a black BMW with a man carrying a bottle of champagne decorated with ribbons and balloons.

For Daphne Sargent, an ex of Cannan's, this was enough for her to fear that the convicted killer had got his hands on the estate agent.

"As soon as I heard about Suzy... I knew it was John," she said. "It had all the hallmarks - right down to the champagne."

She described the criminal as "smooth-talking, attractive, well-dressed and impossible to resist" before he turned violent in 1980.

She changed her name to escape him, saying she was frightened by "the murderous look in his eyes" when he attacked her in bed.

Despite Daphne's claims, Cannon remained stoical in his denial of the killing.
