The horrific smash happened around 10.30pm local time yesterday on the BR-324 road near to the municipality of Gaviao in the north-east Brazilian state of Bahia.

Twenty-one people on the passenger coach were killed, while three onboard the mango truck lost their lives.

Seven were men and 17 women, one of whom was pregnant.

The nationalities of those killed, and the cause of Sunday's crash, has not yet been revealed.

Chilling pictures and footage from the scene show the wreckage of the vehicles and emergency responders trying desperately to save victims.

Firefighters, military police and Federal Highway Police were all involved in the rescue effort.

The coach was travelling from Guarajuba beach, close to Camaçari, to the city of Jacobina.

The survivors have been taken to two hospitals, but there have been no public updates regarding their conditions.

Volunteer Brigade Anjos Jacuipenses said: "On behalf of the entire team, we leave here our deep and sincere condolences to the entire family for such a tragedy and irreparable loss."

Chilling footage taken today show what's left of the upturned bus surrounded by thousands of mangoes as authorities scour through the debris.

It comes as at least 56 people were killed and 903 injured in road crashes in Brazil over the New Year holiday.

Over 725 accidents were reported, the Federal Highway Police announced last week, which was 25 per cent lower than the previous year.

In August last year, seven were killed and dozens injured when a bus carrying football fans crashed on the way back from a match in Brazil.

Supporters of the Corinthians were onboard when the brakes failed and the bus careered into a ravine on a mountainous road, police said.

And in March, a minibus crashed head-on into a truck in the Brazilian state of Para, leaving 12 dead, including a child.
