Driver cheats death when two ton roof ripped off church by storm narrowly misses his car
A CAR driver cheated death when a two ton roof was torn off a former Methodist chapel - and missed his car by a second.
One half of the roof flew off about 6pm on Sunday when the wind got under a temporary membrane and split it in two.
Locals told of a night of storm drama which closed Westgate Road, in the village of Belton near Doncaster, in both directions.
Darren Johnson, 55, was converting the former church and trolley bus museum into a private residence for himself.
He said: “The waterproof membrane and wood got taken off, just missed a car and went into next door.
“It was an old roof and was coming off anyway.
