Sources told the Mail that Bellfield and his fiancee realised they would never have a proper relationship and she became worried about her name appearing on a marriage certificate.

The infamous killer will never be released and is set to die behind bars.

The unnamed woman told the Mail she purchased the ring for Bellfield as a gift, but was told by the jail he couldn't have it unless they wed.

She told the Mail: "But we won't be getting married. It's a joint decision. Levi is gutted but he's far more upset that he won't be able to wear the ring I've got for him.

"We never expected the prison to push things as far as they did. But when they continued to refuse to allow Levi to wear the ring we felt as if we had no choice."

The woman said she isn't splitting up with Bellfield and will continue to visit him in HMP Frankland, in County Durham.

Bellfield was introduced to the woman through Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper.

The Sun first revealed Bellfield’s engagement in May 2022, after he popped the question during a jail visit.

Now the government is seeking to rewrite the marriage law to prevent whole-lifers from marrying.

He is serving two whole life terms for murdering at least three young females.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “Prisoners who have committed the most heinous crimes should not be able get married.

"That’s why we are introducing new laws to block those on whole-life orders from doing so.”
