Massive mystery ‘spinning ice disk’ appears in Michigan River and no one knows why
This incredibly rare natural phenomenon has got people in Michigan spooked
A PERFECTLY circular disk of spinning ice has got an entire town spooked.
The rare natural phenomenon was captured on camera in Michigan's Pine River in the US over the weekend.
The clip shows a perfectly circular sheet of ice spinning perpetually as though someone – or something – has carved it up with a biscuit cutter.
Jason Robinson posted the video on YouTube after spotting it on his way to work on Friday.
He said: "I've seen some pretty cool stuff in the woods -- things you don't expect to see".
But it's not the first of its kind.
Several similar videos have been popping up on YouTube, but scientists aren't entirely sure what the cause is.
There's several theories on why these incredible shapes have begun appearing on frozen rivers across the world.
The most common explanation is that the disks appear when cold, dense air hits a circular surge of water in a river (called an eddy).
When the ice forms over the whirlpool it creates a circle of ice that continues to spin until it melts.
It's the latest act of nature to get people spooked.
On Monday a video of a creepy cloud formation had truth-seekers convinced that flying saucers are hiding in our skies.
