After they are elected, a new MP is always flanked by two other MPs when the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, introduces them.

Mr Galloway had boasted to journalists that Tory former Cabinet Minister Sir David had agreed to be at his side when he takes his seat.

He told Sky News on Friday: “David Davis is one of the great parliamentarians of today and this age.”

But Sir David told the Sun on Sunday he initially planned to do so on a free speech basis.

But he later decided against it when Mr Galloway’s deputy and former Labour MP Chris Williamson refused to condemn Hamas’ October 7 massacre.

PM Rishi Sunak singled Mr Galloway out for criticism in his speech condemning the spread of extremism on UK streets on Friday night.

If no MP agrees to flank Mr Galloway, then senior MPs may be asked to step in.

Parliamentary insiders said they expect Tory grandee Sir Peter Bottomley - known as the father of the house because he has been an MP longer than anyone else - to be asked to be at the swearing in.
