Women regret one night stands but men wish they had MORE of them, scientists claim
Forget the sexual revolution: women are wired to feel bad about brief encounters, a study suggests
WOMEN are wired to regret casual sex while men have evolved to want more of it.
That's according to the latest scientific study which has revealed that most women wish they had never embarked on a one night stand.
It’s a devastating blow after years of feminists' tireless work to emancipate female sexuality.
But researchers now claim that promiscuity just isn’t in women’s nature.
"We found that men more than women regret passing up casual sexual opportunities; women more than men regret having had casual sex," said Prof Leif Edward Ottesen Kennair at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s (NTNU) department of psychology.
The study, published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, asked 263 Norwegians aged between 19 and 37 years old how they felt about recent one night stands.
It said that 30 percent of women regretted their most recent incident of casual sex.
But when it came to asking men, the same percentage regretted passing it up instead, in comparison to just 3.6 percent of women.
"We’re not saying that there aren’t men who regret casual sex,” added Prof Kennair.
"But it is far more common for women to regret saying yes. They are also less unequivocally happy about the experience.
"Women regretted having a one-night stand the most, but they weren’t sorry about saying no at all."
A number of reasons could be to blame, the authors found.
These include fears over pregnancy, STIs and getting a bad reputation – something that could be attributed to cultural rather than biological factors.
But the researchers believed that evolution is still largely to blame for the gender difference.
That’s because men and women have adopted separate sexual strategies because women are left to care for children.
“Due to selective pressure from the big difference in parental investment, one would expect men and women to regret different aspects of casual sex decisions: having casual sex with the wrong partner versus missing a casual sexual opportunity,” the study concluded.
A one night stand has had disastrous consequences for one ex-lag.
