HILLARY Clinton had a front row seat today as she watched her election rival Donald Trump become the 45th President of the United States.

And all eyes were on Hillary as she shared an awkward handshake with Trump in Statuary Hall at the Inaugural Luncheon.

Video showed Trump leaning in to greet his rival, who looked smart in a white trouser suit at Capitol Hill as Clinton's husband Bill watched on.

Smiling Clinton also shook the hand of America's new First Lady Melania Trump.

The event was certain to be a painful one for the Democrat, who was sure she was going to win the election two months ago.

Hillary was the bookies’ favourite for the presidency for most of the election campaign.

And she was no doubt wondering what might have been as she watches Trump’s inauguration up close.

She was greeted by a chorus of boos from the pro-Trump crowd outside the Capitol as she walked in to take her seat.

The losing candidate was all smiles as she was pictured arriving in Washington DC today.

She beamed as she waved after getting out of her car with her husband ahead of the ceremony.

The occasion will leave a particularly sour taste in her mouth after the bitterness of the election campaign.

Trump promised to jail his opponent for her “crimes” if he won the election – a pledge he has since doubled back on.

But the deeply personal nature of many of his attacks will surely still linger in Hillary’s mind.
