Plus whether the killer got caught
THREE members of a British family were murdered in 2012 while in the French Alps.
Iqbal al-Hilli was one of the victims along with her husband and her mother.
Who was Saad al-Hilli’s wife Iqbal?
Iqbal al-Hilli, 47 was one of the victims of a brutal murder in the French Alps.
In 2012, Iqbal, her husband Saad al-Hilli, 50 and her mother Suhaila, 74 were all killed in the attack.
The family were in a picnic spot in the woods of Lake Annecy when the murders took place – which have never been solved.
A 45-year-old French cyclist, Sylvain Mollier was also murdered.
He was shot seven times at point-blank range.
The murder weapon, a vintage Swiss Army 7.65mm P06 Luger, was identified through fragments of the gun found at the scene but the owner has never been traced.
Did Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli have any children?
Saad and Iqbal had children, who were also involved in the attack but survived.
The couple’s two daughters Zainab and Zeena were both there when their parents were shot dead.
Zainab was found gravely injured looking for help before going on to recover at Grenoble hospital.
Zeena wasn’t found until eight hours later.
The daughters were the only two survivors of the attack.
Zainab was seven at the time while Zeena was just four.
Following the killing of their parents, the sisters were placed in the care of other members of the Al-Hilli family.
Both sisters were too traumatised to clearly remember the event.
They have been since interviewed by French authorities to try and gain new evidence.
In 2017, the daughters requested a payout from the French criminal injuries compensation authority.
But, officials blocked the payout insisting “a crime could not be established” because no killer had been traced.

What happened to Saad al-Hilli?
Saad al-Hilli was shot in the lower back as he tried to flee to his BMW.
Following the murders, Saad’s brother Zaid was arrested shortly after under suspicion of conspiracy to murder following an inheritance dispute.
However, he maintained his innocence and was released and cleared.
He did admit to having arguments with his brother before he passed away but denied allegations that he arranged the murders.
The case still remains unsolved, but Annecy public prosecutor Line Bonnet told Swiss newspaper la Tribune de Geneve in 2022: “I think we’re nearly there. We’ll succeed thanks to scientific evidence.”
A documentary was made by Channel 4 which explored what happened on the tragic day.
The TV channel said: “Almost a decade later, this series will re-examine this extraordinary unsolved case; with the use of archive footage and interviews with victims’ friends and family, witnesses, former suspects, journalists and those close to the investigation in France and the UK.”
