On Monday morning bunches of flowers were placed at the scene of the crash in Victoria Road in the St Budeaux area of the city.

Locals say the stretch of road was a “death trap” and an “accident waiting to happen”.

One resident who lives opposite said: “It’s just horrific. Cars treat it like a racetrack and just speed over the brow of the hill without a thought.”

A nearby shopkeeper added: “There are often smaller crashes up there and It’s a wonder there’s not been anything like this before.

“It’s terrifying when all the kids are coming and going from school and they have to cross the road.”
