What is the Half Onion In A Bag Twitter account and how many followers does it need to overtake Donald Trump?
DONALD Trump's Twitter account is one of the most closely scrutinised and controversial in the World.
The new US President uses the platform to put out his message in typically combative fashion, on everything from his foreign policy to Saturday Night Live.
Since being sworn in Trump has shown no sign of curbing his Twitter use, even though it may have seen him break the law after deleting mispelled messages, and prompted mockery when he tweeted a photo of his inauguration with the wrong date.
Now, the US President's Twitter supremacy is facing a challenge from the unlikeliest of sources:
What is the Half Onion In A Bag Twitter account?
The Twitter account @HalfOnionInABag was created on January 20, the date of Donald Trump's inauguration.
Its first tweet, which featured a picture of the eponymous Half An Onion – in a see-through bag – laid out the page's simple purpose.
The caption posed the question: "What if this account that is simply half an onion in a Ziploc bag ended up with more followers than @realDonaldTrump?"
This message is reiterated in the account bio, which reads simply: "Just here to get more followers than @realDonaldTrump".
It is not known who is behind the page. However, its operator explained why it was set up : "I wanted to make some noise and make some people laugh in the process because I think we're gonna all need a good dose of humor to get through this."
Half An Onion has made a promising start to its quest, attracting over 600,000 followers – many of whom have tweeted their enthusiastic support – in the first six days of its existence.
What else has Half An Onion tweeted?
Half An Onion's handful of tweets so far have generally been onion-based jibes directed at the newly sworn-in US President and his family.
For example, one was simply a photo of the bisected onion in a wooden cabinet, with the message: "Still a better cabinet than @realDonaldTrump's."
The account's followers have also got in on the act, one tweeting "Make America Grate Again" with a gif of young chefs grating onions.
How many followers does it need to beat Donald Trump?
Donald Trump's huge Twitter following means Half An Onion still has a very long way to go to topple him – Trump's personal account currently has a whopping 22.2 million followers.
Even in the unlikely event that it continues to gain support at its current rate, and the President's following remains at the same level, it will take Half An Onion over seven months to complete its mission.
