Yesterday police said emergency services had carried out CPR at the scene but Mr Barrett-Hazle sadly died of his injuries.
Detective Inspector Warren Hines, of West Midlands Police said: “We still need these witnesses to come forward to help us establish what happened on the top deck of the 11A service on Monday evening in Rookery Road.
“The family of Leon are being kept informed of the latest development in our investigation and our thoughts remain with them."
Mr Barrett-Hazle was on the No 11A bus, which was heading into the city centre just before 11pm.
A witness relived the attack, saying the victim desperately "gasped" for breath after being stabbed by another passenger.
The man, who did not want to be named, said: "I was downstairs on the bus and the driver stopped and said there's a fight upstairs.
"Downstairs in the bus was full, there were only a few people upstairs.
"I went upstairs and saw this guy gasping for breath, he was moving about slowly. I felt sorry for him, I couldn't do anything for him. The guy was dying.
"The officer dragged him onto the seats and tried to resuscitate him for a good 15 or 20 minutes but they couldn't do anything."
