Three visibly-emotional young hostages were released earlier on Saturday as police warned "the situation is not over yet".

Police later confirmed: "The last hostage has just been released. One person has been arrested.

"We cannot share more information at this time."

Pictures from the scene showed a man wearing a black balaclava holding his hands up in the air as he faced police.

Others showed a man kneeling on the ground and being led by police into a car.

Several special police units were deployed to a building in the centre of the eastern Dutch town of Ede early Saturday morning.

Some 150 homes were evacuated as members of the public were asked to steer clear of the area.

At least four hostages were being held at a local bar named Café Petticoat, according to de Telegraaf, which cited the owner of the business and several anonymous sources.

A man allegedly entered the business at closing time, armed with weapons and explosives, and threatened to blow the place up.

Gelderland police said "there is no indication" the hostage-taker had any "terrorist motive".

Before all of the hostages were freed, police told de Telegraaf that they assumed there was only one hostage-taker.

They refused to comment on the supposed explosives, explaining that doing so "could be to the detriment of safety".

There were no trains running between Barneveld-Zuid and Ede-Wageningen due to the deployment of police, which included specialised teams, a mobile unit, and a negotiator.

An event for people aged 16 and older took place at Café Petticoat on Friday evening and was over by 4am, according to de Telegraaf.

Police reportedly received word of a hostage situation about 6am, after which a massive turnout of offices, ambulances, and fire services arrived on-scene.

Gelderland police wrote on X on Saturday morning: "Due to an ongoing police incident, the police requests to stay away from the centre of Ede.
