Angela Rayner slammed for hounding Tory to show tax details despite refusing to publish hers
Rishi Sunak also insisted Sir Keir and Ms Rayner give a 'straight' answer about her tax affairs
ANGELA Rayner has been slammed as a “hypocrite” for refusing to publish her tax details despite previously hounding a Tory candidate to spill theirs.
It emerged last night Labour’s deputy wrote to the Tory chairman during a by-election in 2021 to demand Jill Mortimer publish her tax return.
But amid allegations she may have dodged capital gains tax on the 2015 sale of her home, Ms Rayner has remained tight-lipped.
She denies any wrong doing and says the tax advice she received exonerates her but won’t publish it or answer questions about it.
In a blatant display of double standards, Ms Rayner said during the Hartlepool by-election campaign now-Tory MP Ms Mortimer had a lot of questions to answer regarding her husband spending time in the Cayman Islands.
She said: “Did they gain any tax advantage from living there – and did she or he advise others of the tax advantages of setting up or living in the Cayman Islands?
“In the interests of transparency, will you now publish a full account of Jill Mortimer’s time in the Cayman Islands? Will you also order Jill Mortimer to publish in full her tax returns covering that period?”
Ms Mortimer’s husband was a financial regulator and moved to the Cayman Islands for work.
Tory former Cabinet Minister Simon Clarke wrote on X: “Hypocrisy is the worst of political sins.”
Rishi Sunak yesterday also insisted Sir Keir and Ms Rayner must give a “straight” answer about her tax affairs.
He told LBC: “Keir Starmer still hasn’t answered any questions properly about what’s going on with Angela Rayner.
“When it comes to me or my affairs, people are very happy to ask lots of questions, including Angela Rayner herself.”
Some activists in “tax inspector” hi-vis vests yesterday appeared with a banner questioning whether Ms Rayner was a “tax dodger” during a campaign event in the North East of England.
