Birmingham Airport security incident: Flights suspended after alert at major transport hub

BIRMINGHAM Airport closed to aircraft following a "security incident" involving an Aer Lingus plane.

The flight was heading to Belfast but returned to Birmingham after an "undeclared item" was found onboard on Tuesday evening.

It was later revealed not to be a security risk and the airport was reopened.

Passengers were encouraged to still turn up to the airport if they have a flight.

An Aer Lingus spokesperson said: "We can confirm that an undeclared item discovered on Aer Lingus Regional flight EI3647, operated by Emerald Airlines, from Birmingham to Belfast today was not a security risk.

"Our teams are currently working to accommodate impacted passengers."

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: “Birmingham Airport reopened at 1800 hours following a security incident on an aircraft.

“All passengers and crew disembarked safely.

“Customers are advised to check with their airline, or on the Birmingham Airport website, before checking in due to potential delays.”

West Midlands Police and British Transport Police have been approached for comment.
