The crew of the Oron then passed on the details to fighter pilots, who — along with Israel’s Iron Dome rocket defence system — managed to knock out 99 per cent of the drones, cruise and ballistic missiles launched by Iran on Saturday night.

Yesterday the Oron pilot, identified only as Major N, revealed: “We were in a strategic location in the middle of the sky.

“We were the first to recognise and see what was coming — it was like a computer game.

“I’ve been a pilot for over 20 years and participated in many operations but this was the most meaningful yet.

“We let the fighter pilots know the biggest threats — the controllers in the back speak to the fighter pilots. I told them ‘this target is on its way. We need to down this’.

“You suddenly realise, ‘My God, what am I doing? I cannot mess this up’.”

The Oron, also known as Mars 2, is a modified Gulfstream G550 business jet which Israeli and US boffins have turned into the world’s most sophisticated stealth plane.

It is manned by eight technicians and the pilots.

Since their launch last year, Orons have identified terror suspects in Gaza, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon using facial recognition and directed attacks from 40,000ft.
