It’s so sad that the fear of being alone keeps women with their cheating husbands
REMEMBER that iconic photograph of Nicole Kidman looking liberated after getting divorced from Tom Cruise?
Now look at the one of comedian Rory McGrath’s wife Nicola, standing by him after discovering not only that he had a secret affair for five years, but that he obsessively stalked his mistress “with the madness of an addict” after she ended it.
Her devastation is palpable.
In an interview at the weekend, she revealed she is tormenting herself over the finer detail of the affair.
She says: “The most hurtful thing was not the sex but that he was in love with her.
"Even now, thinking that gives me a sharp pain in my guts.”
She adds that all their birthdays, Christmases and holidays during that time “are all now contaminated by this knowledge”, and that when she learned the pair had had sex on her living room sofa, she took a picture and emailed it to the mistress with the message: “I am still trying to get the stains off.”
Ouch! All understandable feelings and why, if I was Mrs McGrath (God help him) the marriage would be over: Because those details would torment me.
So I wonder why she has chosen to stay — particularly as it’s a second marriage for both of them and it’s not “for the children” as they don’t have any together.
“If it’s a cold night I like to get into bed and cuddle into Rory and I can’t imagine a life without being held by him, even though he has caused me unimaginable hurt,” she mitigates.
To me, it simply sounds like she would rather have the company of her foolish, cheating husband than be alone.
After all, the prospect for a single woman “of a certain age” finding an eligible partner is rarer than hen’s teeth.
So, as being in a relationship is clearly so important to her, she’s chosen to stick with the devil she already has.
And she’s not alone.
When it was first rumoured that the former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys was having an affair with one of his daughter’s friends, he vehemently denied it and got his wife Julia to publicly back him.
Fast-forward several months and he’s been photographed secretly meeting his alleged lover Lucie Rose at a London hotel.
After 35 years together, two kids and a battle with thyroid cancer to contend with, it’s perhaps understandable that 57-year-old Julia decided to stick at their marriage the first time the rumours surfaced.
But now that forgiveness has been thrown back in her face.
Let’s hope the same doesn’t happen to Nicola.
Caught in a web of widow
AN inquest has recorded an unlawful death verdict on millionaire Barry Pring, who was hit by a stolen lorry on a night out with wife Ganna Ziuzina.
Barry’s family had strong suspicions that Ganna, a former lap dancer from the Ukraine, was somehow involved in his killing so hired a private detective to come up with compelling evidence they called “The Black Widow Files”.
Ganna – who denies the family claims – refused to attend the inquest and is now living in Marbella, Spain, with her new husband, another millionaire Brit, Ivan Lister.
Otherwise known as the bravest man on the Costa del Sol.
NEW research reportedly shows that by the age of six or seven, girls are significantly less likely than boys to think of themselves as “brilliant”.
This has been attributed to issues of low self-esteem etc, but alternatively, couldn’t it just be that we’re less egotistical and prefer to showcase our talent through effort rather than boasts?
Ruddy hilarious
PRIME MINISTER Theresa May wore an eye-catching red suit for her first official meeting with President Trump – prompting commentators to dig deep into their adjective box and pluck out the usual suspects of ruby, tomato and flame to describe its vibrant colour.
But perhaps the occasion calls for a new name for the jaw-dropping brightness of this particular hue?
“Donald’s face” just about covers it.
THANKS to the latest delaying tactics of the Remain camp, Parliament now has to give permission before Article 50 can be triggered.
The bill to be put to the vote runs to just 137 words, but to my mind, that’s still 126 too many.
“The UK voted to leave the EU. Get on with it,” should suffice.
POUT IT THERE, GIRL
CONGRATS to Bake Off winner Candice Brown after her boyfriend revealed they plan to wed.
Candice says her trademark pout isn’t an attempt to be sexy – it’s just her “concentration face.” Lucky her. When I’m concentrating, my mouth resembles a rip in a paper bag. Must try harder. Except that would involve concentration and, well, er . . .
Fashion blows hot and cold
FASHION is full of contradictions. Example: If you’re cold, you wear a jumper. If you’re hot, you opt for something sleeveless. So where does that leave the short-sleeved jumper?
Similarly, cold feet = socks. Warm feet = sandals. Meaning that socks with sandals is just wrong on so many levels.
And now we have new Baywatch actress Kelly Rohrbach’s sartorial mash-up to consider.
A plunging, barely there swimsuit teamed with a woolly hat suggesting she’s off to the slopes of Val D’Isere.
Or am I the only one who’s actually noticed the headwear?
Keep it to yourself, Rhian
FORMER Page 3 girl Rhian Sugden has been approached to take part in an all-star Celebrity Big Brother house to mark the show’s 20th anniversary this summer.
Rhian, who hit the headlines in 2010 for sharing raunchy “sexts” with married TV presenter Vernon Kaye, spent a feisty three weeks in the CBB house in 2012 but says she would love to go back in. She adds: “I am more mature now and a lot less hot-headed.” Cripes, don’t say that, love. They’ll drop you like a hot potato.
All the best Jez
ON screen, Jeremy Kyle can come across as rather brash.
Let’s face it, the company he keeps on stage sometimes demands it.
But off screen he’s great company. So it’s nice to hear that, after the failure of his 13-year marriage a couple of years ago, he’s now in the early stages of dating someone new.
And it turns out that the woman in question is 35-year-old Vicky Burton, who worked as nanny to the Kyle family for several years.
Meaning that she already knows the real Jeremy, has met his kids and, more importantly for the future, knows exactly what he’s like to live with.
