A MAN arrested after a teenage girl's iPhone was stolen as she lay writhing in agony with two broken legs has been cleared by cops.

Ruby-Tuesday Hobbs' phone disappeared after she was mowed down by a suspected drink-driver on Christmas Eve.

The 18-year-old's gold iPhone 6 Plus was swiped at around 6.30am as she lay trapped in railings by a central reservation in Plymouth.

A BMW reportedly mounted a traffic island and smashed into the teen as she stood waiting to cross the road walking to McDonald's with two friends.

A 35-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of stealing her mobile - but police have not been able to find it and say it has not been used since the incident.

The case against the man has since been dropped.

Student Ruby, who lives in the Stonehouse district of the city, had to be freed from the railings and has undergone two operations lasting a total of ten hours.

Surgeons have inserted a metal plate into her right thigh and gave her a blood transfusion.

Ruby was standing on a pedestrian island in the middle of a carriageway near Drake Circus Shopping Centre when she hit by the BMW 3-series coupe.

A 27-year-old man from the city was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving under the influence.

He is still on police bail.
