Crooked curfew tagging scam claims being ‘urgently investigated’
Government demands answers from security firm Capita after The Sun exposed electronic tagging scam where crooks are suspected of giving bribes to staff
JUSTICE Secretary Liz Truss has demanded answers from security firm Capita after The Sun exposed a suspected electronic tagging scam.
The Ministry of Justice said it was “urgently investigating” the matter and Liz Truss has asked Capita to appear before her next week to discuss the allegations.
The Sun exclusively told how crooks were suspected of giving bribes to staff at the firm so they could slip off their ankle tags while they were supposed to be at home under curfew.
The company, which is contracted to run the Government’s electronic monitoring service, allegedly received £400 a time to help at least 32 convicts get around court-ordered curfews and leave their homes.
It was reported the scam came to light after one offender was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder when he was meant to be under curfew.
The minister will raise the allegations with Capita bosses next week that convicts were able to slip off their tags.
