Mystery as man’s body found in water near popular Greek beach with 10kg barbell tied to his leg as cops launch probe

The local authorities said the man's body is believed to have been in the water for several days before being found

THE lifeless body of a man has been mysteriously found near a popular Greek beach with a 10kg barbell tied to his leg.

Cops have launched an immediate investigation into the suspicious death after the man's body was recovered on Schinias beach in Marathon on Sunday.

A diver retrieved the body around 325ft from the shore as an ambulance rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he was later confirmed dead.

The local authorities said the man's body is believed to have been in the water for several days before he was first found.

The man is thought to be aged between 40 to 45 years old.

An autopsy is taking place as the authorities at the nearby port of Rafina are starting to investigate the death.

Marathon is a popular holiday spot for thousands of tourists each year with large crowds typically gathering on Schinias beach.

It comes as another mysterious death gripped Parisian cops after a dismembered body was discovered inside a suitcase dumped under a bridge.

Firefighters made the grim discovery under the Austerlitz bridge after they were called to put out a fire on Saturday.

A murder investigation was launched when the body was first found but in a bizarre twist, the victim's carer, a 34-year-old man has since turned himself in.

The man is said to have told cops he was the disabled victim's carer and claimed the two of them had a dispute, according to French radio station Europe1.

The Paris public prosecutor’s office said: "He has been remanded into custody for murder.
