HEROES CALL

The Sun urges Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak to sign Help For Heroes’ Veterans Pledge

The leaders are also asked to promise veterans will 'get the benefits and compensation they deserve'

THE Sun today urges both Sir Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak to sign Help For Heroes Veterans’ Pledge.

Ahead of this week’s D-Day celebrations, the pioneering forces charity are enlisting whoever wins July 4’s election to keep a designated Veterans' Minister in the Cabinet.

The pledge would undertake to Keep the Office of Veterans’ Affairs, separate from the Ministry of Defence.

It also calls for an independent review into the failings of the medical discharge process.

The leaders are also asked to promise veterans will “get the benefits and compensation they deserve.”

Last night James Needham, CEO of Help for Heroes, said: “Since 2007, over 31,000 veterans and their families have sought support from Help for Heroes, with more people coming forward than ever before.

“Many veterans who do so tell us they feel let down by the system.

“The next Government must do more to support the men and women who have served our country.

“That is why we are urging party leaders to sign the Veterans Pledge and commit to ending the injustices veterans and their families face every day.”

Our call comes as both Labour and the Tories prepared to focus their election messaging on veterans during this week’s D-Day 80 year anniversary celebrations.

Last night Labour promised to set up a A new Armed Forces Commissioner, to improve the lives of personnel and their families.

Sir Keir Starmer said this will be legislated for in the first King's Speech of a new government.
