A hole was cut out of the side of the storage room while a getaway truck was used to shift more than 2,000 of the bags — loved by the Princess of Wales.

Police have launched an appeal for information over the audacious night-time burglary last month at Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

A source told The Sun: “The robbers managed to take the bolts out of the security gate to gain access to the building.

"It is all on an industrial estate and somehow no one saw.

"The culprits cut a hole in the wall in the exact place the storage room with the bags is.

“It definitely looks like it was done with planning and precision.

"They took about 2,000 units and got away. It is incredible that it could happen.

"It is a sleepy town where everyone knows everyone and this is like something from a film.”

Mulberry bags are a celebrity staple, owned by the likes of actresses Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller, Blake Lively and Gemma Arterton.

Supermodel Kate Moss catapulted them to popularity after stepping out with a now-iconic Mulberry Bayswater more than 20 years ago.

A Bayswater costs upwards of £1,200.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said its officers were called at around 7.30am on May 26 “following a report of a burglary overnight”.

They said: “Inquiries into the incident are ongoing and officers are working with the victim to establish what items have been stolen.”

A Mulberry spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the police were alerted to a break-in at our Shepton Mallet site on Sunday 26th May.

"No colleagues were on site at the time of the incident and there has been no impact to operations. We are supporting the police with their investigations and cannot comment further on the matter.”
