There had been a lot of speculation the president's wife wasn't going to join him in the American capital, with sources saying she preferred New York.

The source told source told : "They will re-evaluate toward the end of the school year if they will keep this arrangement or if Melania and Barron will move to Washington.”

“They could go either way right now. They will ultimately do what’s best for Barron.”

Melania and Barron, 10, were expected to join the president at the end of the school year, but the comments cast doubt on whether that would happen.

However Trump confirmed his wife would be leaving their penthouse and would be a "great representative for this country."

He also took the opportunity to set the record straight on what he felt were unfair stories about Melania.

He told reporters:"And a funny thing happens because she gets so unfairly maligned, the things they say – I've known her for a long time, she was a very successful person."
