Donald Trump mercilessly mocked after appearing to invent refugee terror attack in Sweden during Florida rally

DONALD Trump appeared to invent a terror attack in Sweden and blame refugees for the non-existent ‘incident’ during a rally.

The US President was mercilessly mocked after name-dropping the country along with places that have experienced terror attacks, such as Brussels and Nice.

He told a rally in Florida on Saturday that something had happened “last night” in Sweden – but politicians and journalists could not find any evidence of an incident.

"You look at what's happening in Germany, you look at what's happening last night in Sweden,” Trump told the crowd.

“Sweden, who would believe this? Sweden. They took in large numbers. They're having problems like they never thought possible."

He made the comments while defending his executive order that blocked refugees and travellers from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US.

Hundreds took to social media to ridicule his comments using the hashtags #lastnightinSweden and #SwedenIncident.

Model Ines Helene tweeted: “BREAKING: Terror organisation Al-IKEA has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks that occurred last night in Sweden.

“4 armed suspects were reportedly shouting "ABBA-akbar."

Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt tweeted: "Sweden? Terror attack? What has he been smoking? Questions abound."

Gunnar Hokmark, a Swedish member of the European Parliament, retweeted a post that said "#lastnightinSweden my son dropped his hotdog in the campfire. So sad!"

Hokmark added his own comment: "How could he know?"

Numerous social media users responded with Ikea-themed tweets.

Some posted photos of the impossible-to-understand instructions for assembling Ikea furniture, calling it "Secret Plans for the #SwedenIncident."

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Catarina Axelsson said that the government wasn't aware of any "terror-linked major incidents."

Sweden's Security Police said it had no reason to change the terror threat level.

"Nothing has occurred which would cause us to raise that level," agency spokesman Karl Melin said.

Trump’s latest gaffe comes weeks after his advisor Kellyanne Conway referred to a ";Bowling Green Massacre" that never occurred.

During an interview with MSNBC, she said: “President Obama had a six-month ban on the Iraqi refugee programme after two Iraqis came here to this country were radicalised, and they were the masterminds behind the Bowling Green massacre.”

“Most people don't know that because it didn't get covered.”

But it soon emerged that the attack didn’t get covered because it never actually happened.
