Southern railway commuters brace themselves for more travel chaos as conductors walk out in 24-hour strike
SOUTHERN Railway commuters face another 24-hours of misery as conductors walk out on strike tomorrow.
A walk out on Wednesday February 22 is the latest in the long-running dispute between union members and the operator.
No trains will run on some routes, while others will see a reduced service.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “It soon became clear that the only thing Southern were interested in was bulldozing through driver-only operation further and faster with safety and access to services not even on their agenda.
“RMT’s negotiating team is furious at the way this union and its members have been treated.”
Southern Railway's parent company GTR’s chief operating officer Nick Brown said: “The travelling public will find the union’s obstinate refusal to engage in meaningful and constructive talks disappointing, disheartening and increasingly destructive.
“Everyone is sick and tired of the RMT’s strikes and their pointless and intransigent stance needs to stop.”
Strike disruption
- There will be no services between Clapham Junction and Milton Keynes Central via Kensington Olympia / Watford Junction
- No service between Leatherhead and Guildford
- No Rye – Ashford International shuttle services during peak periods.
- Reduced services between London Bridge and Brighton, Eastbourne or Littlehampton
- Reduced services between Brighton and Seaford / Eastbourne / Hastings / Ashford and between Brighton and / Bognor Regis / Littlehampton / Portsmouth Harbour / Southampton Central
- Most services between Brighton and Hove will not operate
Southern passengers have faced months of disruption following industrial disputes.
Many had hoped reliability would improve after a deal was announced with union Aslef, but the unions members sensationally rejected it.
