The unidentified man was pictured wearing just shoes, socks and a backpack running down Pond Street as he braved 50mph gusts that have battered the country today.

Eagle-eyed photographer Scott Merrylees, who captured the unusual sight, tweeted: "Not quite the picture I had imagined as I set out to photograph effects of #stormdoris in #Yorkshire this aft [sic]. #Sheffield #nakedman #running."

It is unclear why the man was naked but the stunt did raise a few eyebrows on social media.

One Twitter user suggested: "Happen [sic] his clothes got blown away."

Another joked: "Don't you hate it when you have that dream."

It comes after Storm Doris claimed its first victim - a 29-year-old woman who died after being “struck” by “wooden debris from a nearby building” as she walked past a Starbucks in Wolverhampton.

Meanwhile dozens have been injured in separate incidents as gusts of up to 95mph battered large swathes of the country.

A schoolgirl was taken to hospital with “life-threatening injuries” after a ceiling collapsed on a class of children in a sports hall in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

Two pensioners were rushed to hospital after a tree toppled onto their car in Church Stretton, Shropshire.

The 75-year-old driver and his passenger, 80, had to be cut out of the vehicle while one of the men had to be treated for a cut to his neck and chest pain.

A man is also said to be in a “serious condition” in a central London hospital, following reports of “debris falling from the roof of a building”, the Metropolitan Police said.

A woman in her sixties has also been taken for treatment at Royal Stoke University Hospital for a “serious head injury” after being hit by a carport roof in Hartshill, Stoke on Trent, shortly before 2.15pm.

In Walton Highway, Norwich, a double decker bus was blown over leaving five injured on the A47.

Incredible dashcam footage captured the moment a driving instructor had a near miss with a tree in Spalding, Lincss, during the storm.

Storm Doris caused travel disruption on the roads and rail network, brought down trees, grounded planes, forced the closure of the Port of Liverpool, toppled lorries and also a bus in Cambridgeshire.

Forecasters say the weather system will blow off throughout the night, but travel chaos could continue as temperatures are expected to plunge below freezing overnight.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning of ice for most of the UK lasting until 9am on Friday, with temperatures dropping as low as -4C in the north of Scotland.
