Bizarre moment drunken fight erupts on packed train as revellers anger fellow passenger by repeatedly placing a BAGEL on his head

BOOZED-UP train passengers were filmed fighting on an early morning service out of London after tempers flared due to a BAGEL being placed on people's heads.

Police boarded the rowdy train and held it at Potters Bar yesterday after three fights broke out in the same train carriage.

A stunned traveller managed to capture the bizarre journey on film, which appeared to see a few different disagreements going on due to booze and baked goods.

Dougie Stew filmed a group of women fighting, as elsewhere in the carriage revellers piled bagels on other passengers heads while chanting "she's got a bagel on her head".

Passengers can be heard singing "For he's a jolly good bagel" as a man subject to a number of bagels being placed on his head begins to throw them out of the window before losing his cool.

Dubbed 'Bagelgate', the footage even has its own hashtag.

In addition to the bagel balancing game which sparked anger and the fight, a group of men could also be seen scrapping on the platform.

The train –the 00.54 Great Northern service from King's Cross to Huntingdon – was held for 18 minutes while the police took statements.

Dougie, who was travelling to Hatfield, Hertfordshire, said: "The only word that does it justice is surreal. It was completely and utterly surreal.

"I got on at the first carriage and you could see that everyone had had a good night.

"These girls were grabbing bagel after bagel from their handbags and just putting them on people's heads and singing.

"It was pretty funny but then people started getting a bit worked up and all of a sudden these two girls are going at one another.

"It's hard to know how it started – one of them was saying the other one looked at her funny. They had to get a few bodies in between to keep them apart.

"The bagel thing was still going on at the same time and this fella started chucking them out the window. I don't think he thought it was funny anymore.

"Some of the more level-headed people on board had to separate these girls because they were repeatedly getting up and trying to get at each other.

"I was sat there filming it thinking 'there's so many plots going on here, it's like an episode of Black Mirror'. I've never seen anything like it."

Dougie, 25, who had been in London visiting Twitter's headquarters in his role as a content creator, said another unrelated fight then spilled out on to the platform at Potters Bar.

He said: "This group of guys came running down from one of the other carriages, banging on the windows and giving out loads of abuse.

"I think some people from our carriage objected to it and that's prompted more chaos outside.

"All the while, this guy is still getting bagels put on his head and chucking them out the window. I don't know how these girls had so many of them.

"I think it was pretty much the last train out of London towards Peterborough that night and it was just crazy. Probably the weirdest thing I've ever seen. I've called it Bagelgate.

"In fairness, once the police boarded, everyone calmed down and was pretty helpful with them. The two women actually stayed on the train and eventually we got going again."

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said: "We were called at 1.15am on Sunday to reports of a disturbance on a board a train. We attended and spoke to passengers but no allegations of any offences were made.

"If anyone wants to come forward to make any complaints then we will investigate further."

A spokesman for Great Northern said: "We work very closely with the British Transport Police to address this sort of anti-social behaviour. If anyone experiences something similar, they can text the police discreetly on 61016."
