Who is Michael Lane?

Michael Lane, 27, was found guilty of murdering Shana at her flat in Chrisdory Road, Mile Oake, Porstlade.

Lane, Shana's ex-boyfriend, became "obsessed" with her after she got back together with previous partner Ashley, Lewes Crown Court heard.

The court heard the pair met while working at Brighton Fire Alarms in June 2015, but by the start of 2016 the on-off relationship deteriorated.

The tyre and exhaust fitter had been told by police to stay away from Shana after allegedly stalking and harassing her in the months leading up to her death.

The court heard that weeks before she was found dead, Lane was cautioned by police after he stole a key to her back door before letting himself in as she hid under her duvet.

The jury also heard Lane put a tracker device on her car and told a friend "she'll pay for what she's done" after she got back together with Ashley.

Jurors also heard Ashley's car was damaged, with a note left on it reading: "Dear Ash, Shana has and always will cheat on you. Happy New Year."

What's the latest on the Portslade murder case?

Michael Lane was found guilty of murdering his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend on March 22 2017 by slitting her throat and torching her bedroom.

There were claps and cheers in court when the jury returned its verdict after just over two hours of deliberation.

The Honourable Mr Justice Green had told the jury that it is "common ground" that Shana was murdered, but Lane, of Thornhill Rise, Portslade, denies it was him.

At the opening of his trial on March 8, prosecutor Philip Bennetts QC said: "Unfortunately, Michael Lane had become obsessed by Shana.

"That obsession with her translated into killing her. He would not allow anyone else to be with her."

Jurors also heard Mr Cooke's car was damaged, with a note left on it reading: "Dear Ash, Shana has and always will cheat on you. Happy New Year."

Police alerted to a man matching Lane's description found a pair of bloodstained white trainers by a hedgerow five days after Shana's death, with DNA showing Lane had worn the shoes at some point.

The court heard Lane also told police he had gone to Shana's flat on the morning of her death.

Prosecuting, Philip Bennetts QC told jurors: "The front door was open so he went in and saw Shana. Shana was on the floor leaning against the bed.

"There was no burning or fire. He left. He didn't telephone the police. He didn't telephone for an ambulance.

"He told no-one about what he had seen. He panicked. He said he thought the police would blame him."

What is happening with the IPCC investigation?

After Shana's death, the case was referred to the police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Forces have a statutory duty to refer cases to the IPCC if people die during or after contact with police, after which the IPCC will decide whether to investigate.

A spokesman said the probe into Shana's death is ongoing.
