THE Government yesterday hosted a major Investment Summit.

We sent the message that Britain is open for business and ready to lead the way once more.

The world’s biggest companies agree with us.

That’s why this week they’ve backed Britain to the tune of £63billion.

There’s even more today.

Another huge investment of over half a billion pounds, with three big UK investment managers ploughing funding for housing into our communities alongside government backing.

That’s not all.

We’re giving more funding to local communities to build more homes and transform brownfield land, clearing empty buildings, car parks and industrial wastelands.

By using this package of investment to tackle the housing crisis, we will build tens of thousands of new homes the country desperately needs.

Keir Starmer promises ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ as he makes 1st conference speech as PM

And not just houses, but the infrastructure people need to live good lives.

Remove barriers

It’s time to get Britain building again.

This country boasts beautiful towns and cities with historic houses, railway stations and civic buildings still standing tall today.

They remind us what our country is capable of.

It was British ingenuity that gave the world railways and nuclear power stations.

We exported them across the globe. But modern Britain has forgotten how to build them.

Our workers have always taken pride in their role in building Britain from the ground up.

We told the world who we were — a prosperous nation, proud of its heritage and confident in its future.

We must do that again.

The centuries-old infrastructure we built is incredible.

But it is madness that we are still relying on it in the 21st century.

Sir Keir Starmer

Other countries are taking advantage of modern trains, while we are still relying on railways from the Victorian era.

Passengers travelling from Darlington to Shildon today will be riding on track that is nearly 200 years old.

Communities across the country are paying the price for this failure to build.

Leeds is the largest city in Western Europe without a mass transit system.

Water scarcity is stopping towns from expanding because we haven’t built a reservoir for 30 years.

And if you are a business applying for a grid connection today, you will have to wait until the late 2030s.

Growth is number one priority

Growth is our number one priority. It’s time to remove the barriers that prevent this country from building and stop our economy from growing.

Too often, plans are stuck in a backlog of bureaucracy.

That is why we are reforming planning regulations so we can build more quickly and for a better price.

We won’t allow a vocal minority, opposed to development of any kind, to veto the aspiration of a generation.

We are empowering expert planning officers to boost building, not NIMBYs who stifle growth.

That’s the kind of radical change this country needs and is essential if we are to build the 1.5million new homes we have promised by the end of this Parliament.

The Tories left our infrastructure to rot. They let the housing crisis spiral out of control. Roads full of potholes. Our railways a mess. Schools and hospitals literally crumbling

Sir Keir Starmer

We will create good jobs for the sparkies, brickies and plumbers of the future.

We will boost our economy. We will tackle the housing crisis, with the biggest wave of social and affordable housing in a generation.

And we will make sure people’s hard work is rewarded.

The Tories left our infrastructure to rot.

They let the housing crisis spiral out of control. Roads full of potholes. Our railways a mess. Schools and hospitals literally crumbling.

They didn’t bother to invest in the future of this country because they were so busy trying to save their own skins.

Holiday’s over

Their own Investment Minister said they “took a sort of infrastructure investment holiday” while they were in charge.

Well, the holiday’s over. We’re picking up our tools and getting to work.

Building a future for our nation that our children and grandchildren won’t just benefit from but be inspired by.

We will be the generation that rebuilt Britain.

New towns, with good homes built to last.

Able to get to work easily, on efficient public transport that connects every part of the country.

Being able to send your kids to a good school nearby, and get an appointment with your GP just down the road.

Buildings, towns and cities we can be proud of.

Some will say that this is unrealistic, but Britain has done it before.

That dream is possible. We’re investing in Britain. Let’s get building.
