'I WAS SCARED HE'D BITE MY LEG'

Female cop feared she would not survive ‘cannibal killer’ Matthew Williams onslaught after bursting into blood-soaked room and battling him with three other officers

PC Kelda Griffiths tells inquest raging Matthew Williams had 'unbelievable strength' and it took four officers to restrain him after he butchered shop worker Cerys Yemm, 22

A WOMAN police officer told an inquest today how she feared she would not survive as she tackled a drug-crazed "cannibal" killer lying over his young victim's body.

PC Kelda Griffiths said raging Matthew Williams had "unbelievable strength" despite being Tasered and she was scared he would bite her leg after he butchered shop worker Cerys Yemm, 22.

PC Griffiths, 39, said she remembered seeing Cerys's mutilated face - which was "horrific" - and the growling sounds made by Williams did not sound human.

She told the inquest: "What I heard, the growling, it was demonic. It was the sounds you hear on TV.

"He was fighting and he was struggling. I could hear Pc Cottrell saying 'Calm down Matthew, I'll have to Taser you again'.

"I did not want to take my eyes off Matthew. My leg was close to his mouth and I was very concerned after what I had seen that he would bite me.

"He was lashing around, his head was banging on the floor. As much as we were shouting 'calm down', there was no stopping him. He had unbelievable strength."

The officer said she used a technique to apply pressure to a point behind Williams' ear four times to try to subdue him but it had no effect.

It was so terrifying that PC Griffiths thought to herself: "I love you mum and dad", she told the hearing. She added: I didn't know if I would survive this incident".

A coroner's jury has previously heard officers Tasered the "demonic, black-eyed" killer after hotel owner Mandy Miles found him with blood dripping from his mouth.

The landlady said Williams, 34, appeared to be chewing on his victim's face - although "science" has since proved he was not performing an act of cannibalism, the inquest heard.

Yesterday PC Alan Cottrell told the inquest how one of the Taser bolts blasted Williams between the eyes but he continued "snarling and growling" as they put handcuffs and leg straps on.

Today PC Griffiths said Williams was uncontrollable even after the third time he was Tasered.

She told the hearing: "He was still lashing around and he needed to be brought under control for his own safety."

She said she put her arm over Williams' mouth and she could still feel him breathing as he was taken away.

Afterwards she stayed with Mrs Miles and other shocked residents at the Sirhowy Arms hotel, a "halfway house" at Argoed, near Caerphilly, South Wales, the inquest heard.

She said: "What we saw was horrific. The residents were crying. One female resident was particularly shocked. Mandy also was."

Williams died after being taken into custody, the inquest has been told.

PC Griffiths also said she at first did not believe an emergency report that a killer was "eating" his victim at the hotel.

She told the court she knew Williams had been violent towards cops in the past and refused to enter the room without backup fearing a Dale Cregan-style ambush.

The schizophrenic ex-con had been released from jail two weeks before the killing with no medication or supervision, his mother told the inquest.

His best mate said Williams had binged on drink and drugs in the days before the bloodbath in November 2014.

The inquest in Newport continues.
