Sports Direct customer buys ‘new’ £25 coat and finds cigarettes, bank statements and medical records in the pockets

Roger Barrett says the store told him he must have picked up another shopper's coat by mistake

A SHOPPER found cigarettes, bank statements and medical records in the pockets of a "new" coat he bought from Sports Direct.

Roger Barrett paid £25 for the jacket — which had labels and barcodes attached — but says the store told him he must have picked up another customer's coat by mistake.

Shop staff also suggested the private papers belonged to a SHOPLIFTER who was interrupted while trying to steal the grey No Fear Racing anorak, he says.

Roger, 69, a carpet shop owner from Gillingham, Kent, said: "Everything with the jacket seemed fine in the shop — I went to the till and managed to pay with no problems.

"But later when I got home and put it on I put my hands in the pocket and found all this stuff."

: “It’s obviously been returned and they’ve just put it back on the rack. If I wanted the anorak secondhand I would have gone to a charity shop.

“They’ve come up with these excuses as if they really feel like anyone would fall for it, and an hour of my time on the phone to them was totally wasted.

“For a retail outlet to be behaving like that is just outrageous. There were barcodes and labels on it when I bought it — how could they think I would believe it was a customer’s jacket?"

He says he was offered a refund but has still not received the money.

A spokesman for Sports Direct said: "We do not comment on individual cases.

"However, we pride ourselves on good customer service and if you can supply us with contact details for the customer in question, we will attempt to resolve the situation to his satisfaction."
