BRITAIN'S SMALLEST CASTLE

Stunning grade II-listed castle boasting just one bedroom goes on sale for £550,000

Turreted Molly's Lodge is a teeny fortress in half an acre of gardens

HERE's a great chance to make your home an actual castle – for a mere £550,000.

This Grade II listed building appears to be the UK's smallest castle, with just a single bedroom.

Molly's Lodge once served as a gatehouse to the Weston Park Estate in Warwickshire.

It now sits surrounded by trees in on a 0.61 acre site near the village of Long Compton.

The pyramidal roof, mullion windows and limestone turrets certainly give it a strong, if squashed, appearance.

But though you might imagine a long history of defending the landscape, in fact the mini fort was constructed in the 1830s by Edward Blore.

The famous British architect also restored Lambeth Palace and completed the enlargement of Buckingham Palace for Queen Victoria.

The property's grounds come with a long gravel driveway leading to the oak-glazed front door, an orchard, a pond and vegetable patches and a chicken run to help the owners live the Good Life.

Behind the front door is a lobby and a stone arch that leads through to a fitted kitchen.

The dining room next door features a stone mullion window and a decorative Victorian cast iron fireplace over a stone hearth.

The downstairs also holds a bathroom, a sitting room, and a spiral staircase leading up the turret to the first floor bedroom.

The £550,000 price tag also includes a mews building and more than half and acre of gardens

For the £550,000 price tag the owner will also get the keys to Molly's Mews on the site.

The double carport and garage also comes with a secure office and, above, a one-bedroom apartment complete with sitting room, kitchen area and bathroom.

Savills estate agents in Banbury, Oxon, said: "Molly's Lodge is an attractive Grade II Listed former gate house to the Weston Park Estate.

"Dating to 1834, the property was designed by Edward Blore who is most notable for his completion of John Nash's design of Buckingham Palace.

"The property occupies a plot of just over half an acre and is further complimented Molly's Mews, a detached timber framed building incorporating a single garage, two open bay carports, a secure home office and a self-contained one bedroom annexe with living space.

"Molly's Lodge is situated at the northern edge of the Cotswolds on the southern tip of Warwickshire, close to the borders of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire."

Earlier this week we told how Britain's smallest detached house — measuring just 11ft 10in by 10 ft 3in and 12 ft tall — is being transformed into a boutique hotel in Derbyshire.

A one-bed house just 7ft 11in wide went on the market for £600,000 last month in Ealing, West London.

And in 2014 Britain's smallest home — half the size of a train carriage with 188 sq ft of floor space — sold for £275,000 in Islington, North London.
