Human remains found in plane crash off coast of Scotland
HUMAN remains have been discovered in the wreckage of a plane crash off the coast of Scotland.
Police Scotland tonight said the remains were found inside a small aircraft which was recovered from the North Sea, north-east of Lerwick, Shetland.
The plane was discovered by mercy crews on Friday afternoon.
It was brought ashore by a fishing boat today.
The force said enquiries into the incident were still ongoing.
A spokesperson added: "Police received a report of a small aircraft having been recovered from the water in the North Sea, north-east of Lerwick, around 14:20 on Friday 6 December.
"The aircraft was brought to shore on Sunday 8 December, and human remains were found within."
In October 2023, a frantic search was launched for a missing German place which lost contact over the North Sea.
HM Coastguard supported German authorities during the search for a light aircraft which had one person on board.
The plane lost contact over the North Sea on Saturday, September 30 after taking off from Germany.

The alarm was raised with the coastguard on Monday, October 2 as it was believed to be in the UK Search and Rescue region.
A fixed-wing aircraft was sent out at midday to search the area between Shetland and Norway.
Norway search and rescue authorities also assisted the search.
However, there was no sign of the plane and the search was stood down around five hours later at around 5.40pm.
