Husband Peter was seriously wounded when the attacker lunged at them with a carving knife.

He was last night stable in hospital with daughter Lydia, 18, at his side.

A man was arrested after taking Peter’s Land Rover from the drive and crashing during a police chase.

Yesterday pals told how Good Samaritan Tracey, a former ballroom dance champ, struggled with alcohol for years.

But she got clean at a rehab centre which she continued to visit as a voluntary support worker.

At the end of 2015 she found a young man asleep in the car park and invited him to the family’s £600,000 home in Stourbridge, West Mids, the same day.

The couple later set up the man in a flat 30 miles away.

Peter gave him a job at his safety barrier business, and the family bought him a TV and phone.

But friends said the addict fell back into drugs.

Within months he sold the furniture and stopped turning up for work.

The couple got him another flat in Brierley Hill, three miles away.

But he sold valuables and was back on the streets. He also continued to pester Tracey for hundreds of pounds at a time, pals said.

Police are probing claims that on Monday the couple cancelled the man’s phone contract and a direct debit they had set up for him.

Cops believe they then received abusive calls on Wednesday evening.

Before Tracey she got home from the centre that night pals told her to keep her doors and gates locked.

One friend said: “She was a golden-hearted woman. It’s a terrible tragedy.”
