In an apparent bid to avoid the risk of waking up in his coffin, he requested that he be given ‘a lethal injection’ after being certified dead.

He wrote in his 2008 will: “I hereby express the wish that my Trustees will use their best endeavours to ensure that after I have been certified dead and before I am buried my body shall receive a lethal injection.”

The Queen was also said to be among the millions of listeners who regularly tuned into his show before he was replaced by Jeremy Vine.
