A spokesperson for NCC and Newport High School said: "Following an incident when a former key stage three pupil came onto the school site, staff instigated its emergency procedures to ensure the safety of pupils.

"This included a lockdown procedure towards the end of the school day. Police attended and supported the school.

"Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further on the details on the incident, but it was extremely upsetting for both staff and pupils, particularly those who witnessed the incident.

"We are aware of a rumour that a knife was involved but at this stage we have no evidence that was the case and can confirm that no weapons were used.
