SUPERCAR SMASH

Astonishing pics show mangled wreckage of £2m Ferrari after ‘mechanic took it on spin’ & smashed into lamp post

Pictures reveal the extent of the damage

A SERVICE tech could be in hot water after smashing an ultra-rare £2million Ferrari F40 into a lamppost.

The iconic Italian supercar crashed into the post, before flipping on its side on the A5 London Road in Markyate, Herts on Thursday afternoon.

Emergency services raced to the scene and the male driver was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries. There were no passengers.

Photos of the mangled red Ferrari show the seats were covered in protective plastic at the time of the smash - pointing to it being driven by a service technician rather than its owner.

And Lawrence Whittaker, who owns Lister, Britain’s oldest racing car manufacturer, tweeted: “Heartbreaking F40 huge crash on the A5 today! Apparently it was in with a specialist for some work?”

He added: “Can you imagine the call to the owner: ‘Hello, erm you know your F40…’.”

The entire front clamshell of the car was torn off in the smash, exposing the front wheels, suspension, radiator, and luggage compartment.

The F40 boasts a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 471 hp and 426 lb-ft of torque.

This particular Ferrari is known to be the highest-mileage F40 in existence - a distinction with dubious honour for a supercar with the F40’s prestige.

It was brought to the UK in the 1990s by a British businessman, although its not clear who owns the car today.

There’s only around 75 F40s on the road in the UK and only around 1,300 were ever produced.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Police said: “Police were called at 12.50pm yesterday (Thursday 16 January), following reports of a road traffic collision on London Road, Markyate.

“It is reported that a red Ferrari had collided with a lamppost.

“The driver was taken to hospital for treatment, and the vehicle was recovered.”

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “An ambulance was sent to the scene and transported the driver of the car, an adult man, to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

In April last year a Ferrari F40 worth £2.6 million was wrecked after it was crashed by a 24-year-old dealership employee on the way to a motor show.

The supercar smashed into the wall of a tunnel in Stuttgart, Germany, while trying to make it just 11 miles to the event.

Last month Premier League star Michail Antonio had to be cut from the wreckage of his £260,000 Ferrari FF after a horrific road smash at Theydon Bois, Essex.
